About updateslo

Who we are, how we work and the principles behind our advice on broadcast studios and live production.

A small consultancy with a studio background

updateslo started in Bath in 2014 as a design practice for television studios and has grown into a consultancy and information resource. We cover the studio, the cameras, the lighting and the sound. Our aim is to give clear guidance that production teams can act on.

Helen Marshall founded the company after years of designing studios and galleries, where she saw how often good equipment was undermined by a poor layout. A camera that cannot see the set or a gallery without clear sightlines costs time on every show. She wanted to bring the planning questions forward, to the point where changes are still cheap.

Over time Daniel Okafor joined to handle camera and control systems, and Priya Shah to lead lighting and sound. Having these disciplines in one small team means a plan is reviewed from several angles before it reaches you. A lighting decision is checked against the camera choice, and both against the audio chain.

We work with producers, studio managers and technical teams at broadcasters and live event companies. Projects range from planning a new studio to advising on a single camera system or briefing a crew for a one-day conference. We keep the team small so the people you speak to are the people who do the work.

Alongside client work we publish articles about studio design, camera control, lighting, sound and gallery workflow. They are written for working technicians and producers, and they reflect the questions we are asked most often. We would rather explain a decision plainly than hide it behind jargon.

We do not sell equipment, so our recommendations are not tied to any supplier. Our income comes from the advice itself, which is priced openly on the prices page. That keeps the relationship simple: you pay for planning, and we are accountable for the quality of the documents we hand over.

Principles that shape every project

These habits apply whether the job is a full studio plan or an afternoon of camera advice. They explain why our documents look the way they do and what you can rely on when working with us.

  • We start from how your team produces, not a template
  • Plans are checked by camera, lighting and sound together
  • Documents are written for installers and operators
  • We say clearly what is included before work starts
  • Drafts are shared early so you can correct us
  • We are independent of equipment suppliers
  • Handover notes explain the reasons behind choices

What we stand for

  1. Clarity

We write plans and specifications in plain language, with drawings that show what is meant. If a recommendation needs a reason, we give it, so your team can judge it and explain it to others.

  2. Craft

Studio design is detailed work, from cable bend radii to the angle of a lamp. We take the time to check these details, because small errors in planning become expensive on the day of a show.

  3. Reliability

We confirm scope and cost in writing and keep to what we agree. Our documents are built so that a live production can depend on them, with no surprises for the crew or the installers.
